lighting class, entry 1

The assignment was to photograph a metal band + then make them country. I don't like the country boy band ones sooo none for you!
(the first two were taken with a medium-format camera and thereafter are my Nikon 35mm DSLR, which shows you exactly how much i need a new lens + camera cleanup)

our first assignment, to mimic film noir movies.

As modeled by my lovely pink-haired cupcake;

I like this one, despite her head being cut off.

Ruff + bodice is four pieces, and the skirt is three. The cards are sewn together and some are reinforced with hot glue. The back bodice corsets, and the pieces are all held together by strips of cards and sticky velcro. My crit was amazing, they told me I stole the show and that my card deconstruction was better than Martin Margiela, who is pretty up there in the world of deconstructed clothes. :)

Now if only I could finish the boards.

i guess it's amusing to note that i got in for free, because 'children under 15' are free.

we arrived literally as they were closing the 'natural entrance' so we had to take the elevator down. 700 feet! i've never been inside a cave before so it was slightly daunting.

the bats were flying but we didn't stay, because we wanted to see the living zoo too, because we were told the bats didn't fly for another couple weeks. but we didn't make it in time; we miscalculated the summer hours vs the winter hours. stupid.

hm, okay. the photos here were hard to take because the exposures had to be so long and i had stupidly forgotten my tripod. the formation is called 'dollhouse theatre.' it's about as tall as i am, if that.

don't think this had a name. i just liked the lighting. 10 seconds, i think.

those look like little alien pods, don't they? this exposure was something like 25 seconds long, and it's interesting because none of the lighting in the carlsbad caverns is coloured; it's all white spotlights.

this is the chandelier, i believe. i took a lot of this formation but many came out too bright, because the spotlight was so directly on the 'chandelier' part that if i shortened the time, everything else was black.

see how bright it is?

this is the end of the hall of giants. the camera is sort of angled upward. it's so interesting, the blues and the greens. they're not there at all.

this is the giant dome and the twin domes. they're really, really big. this pictures sort of remind me of NASA photos of star nebulas, if you know what i'm talking about. i don't remember how long this was.

just one of the branches off into areas we weren't allowed.

gladiator;

The Colosseum, obviously. It's really very intimidating, because it's so big. I can't imagine what it was like to see it in it's full glory. All those holes in the walls were from the war, it was originally covered in metal..iron? spikes or something like that, it's been awhile. And they were removed and melted down.

For those that don't know a lot about the Colosseum, there was a floor along that entire bottom oval-shaped [ovular? ehehe] area, and the gladiators + animals were kept beneath it. Often, they entered through trapdoors in the ceiling. That flat diagonal area around the top was actually seats at one point, but they've obviously worn away. It continues all the way around, and also to the areas above and below it. You can see that it's clearly missing a whole upper floor, which would've made it even more intimidating. You guys can't have any idea how huge this thing is until you see it [and I hope you do].

Like I mentioned before, those arches would've been covered with more of that sloping rock, with tiny little benches. It looks like so many people must have fallen to their death because it was incredibly steep.

And again.

Can you imagine? Being a Roman and coming to this place like people go to venues to see shows. Except you're going to watch people fight for their lives. I'd also like to note the thinness of those bricks. One by one they were placed. Talk about motivation, huh? Hahaa.

This is my brother, who is not posing. We were at the meeting place for the tourgroup to re..join. He's probably trying to figure out the precise angle of the archway, or something.

Entry gate with the fancy name I can't remember. Really bad photo, but all the people put it into perspective.

southern france sparkles. observe:

this is in the morning. note the different blues in the water, even through the tinted bus glass. that's Nice, down there. pronounced, "niece." note how the cruise ship overtakes everything else in the waters.

you can see the blues better.

it has to sparkle, it has to shine! look how white.

i just liked the angle. note how in europe, the shutters are functional.

a lot of the "typical" houses looked like this. this weird, soft, pink. even the bell-tower, which i'll post later. i think this was actually in monaco, but the buildings all look the same [except near montecarlo].

even the graveyards. ignore the bus window glare streaks. glare!

this is when the tour ended. it was something like 5pm.

so supposedly these drawings on rocks were from indians ancient zillions of years ago, but i don't know what i believe. which is ironic, i can believe in ghosts but not the idea that markings on a rock can last hundreds of years. i make sense. either way, it was incredibly windy and there were lots of rattlesnakes so we didn't linger.

also, i've discovered this community: reflect_it and it's incredibly fun. my post is here, the first of many i think. almost as fun as A Softer World, and i can participate too!

The Trinity Site, Ground Zero, in New Mexico. The radiation level isn't very bad - you get more from eating a banana, which are radioactive because there's plutonium in them. It's open twice a year, today being one of those days, obviously. Pretty interesting. Tomorrow's post will probably be more.

history lesson;

this is pompeii:

If you don't know the story about Pompeii, then you clearly grew up in a box. It was an entire city that got covered when Mt Vesuvius erupted, and was pretty much preserved as if it was still that day. There were still remnants of bread and meats and crazy stuff like that.

Typical early civilization - this is one of their arenas, which was used like the Colosseum later on, except they kept the "gladiators" in public cages, like zoo creatures. There were still bodies in them! No one bothered to unlock the cages when it started to rain dust and ash. Not that it would've done them much good. Moving on.

Typical street. Those big blocks in the middle were what people walked on to cross the street, because the street itself was virtually a cesspool of ick. Pompeii had nothing even close to a septic system, except for the street. Isn't that lovely? And then it would RAIN and make things worse. I WANT to say that's Vesuvius in the background but I'm not certain. Regardless, this is one of the paths to one of the "Lupanares."

What is a lupanare, you ask?

The lupanares [lupin-are :D] were like whore-houses, I guess. They were an integral part of Pompeii lifestyle and were a lot of the reason why it got so much traffic. My ancestors owned the biggest one they've been able to discover, you can bet my mother loved to hear that. So anyway, to help these travellers find the "special" lodgings they wanted, the people of Pompeii carved the above into the street stoneblocks. The cocks pointed in the direction of the closest lupanare. Haha, can you imagine that in today's society?

Pompeii didn't have a water system at all, and because the streets were so gross, it was a smelly, disgusting place to live, and nothing from the ground could really be relied on unless it was from private gardens or, these holes in the ceiling. They're in the main room of the bigger houses, and beneath it is a small pool-like area. When it rains, the pool area fills up with fresh, clean water. Or so the theory went.

This has nothing to do with history. Check out the size of the lemon on the far right. They were selling lemons and oranges when you exit Pompeii. And shot glasses. Uh, good combination, I think.
